Economic upside of joint action

The UNEP and Climate and Clean Air Coalition assessment quantifies the financial upside of tackling air pollution and climate change together. By rolling out 25 proven measures—ranging from renewable power and electric vehicles to clean‑cooking fuels—the report projects an average benefit‑cost ratio of fifteen to one. In monetary terms, every dollar invested could generate roughly $15 in economic gains, equivalent to 2.8 % of global GDP in 2035, rising to 4.5 % in 2050 and 11.4 % by 2100. Health toll and prevention potential

The same analysis highlights the human cost of inaction. In 2025, outdoor air pollution was linked to 6.4 million premature deaths worldwide, while household pollution added another two million, including about 300 000 child deaths. The exposure also sparked 5.5 million new cases of childhood asthma that year. If the full suite of measures is applied, the model estimates that by 2050 the world could avert roughly 144 million premature deaths—96 million from ambient pollution alone—and prevent hundreds of millions of chronic‑disease cases. These health gains would also lower healthcare spending, which reached 9.3 % of global GDP in 2023.

Implementation hurdles and policy pathways

The report warns that fragmented decision‑making and weak enforcement could postpone full rollout by up to eight years. To unlock the projected returns, governments need integrated planning that aligns climate, air‑quality and health policies across six sectors—energy, industry, transport, agriculture, residential cooking and waste. Strengthening institutions, tightening vehicle‑emission standards, expanding renewable electricity and curbing super‑pollutants such as methane and black carbon are cited as priority actions. Mobilising public and private finance at the scale suggested by the fifteen‑to‑one benefit‑cost ratio is presented as the decisive step toward cleaner air and a more resilient climate future.
