Rising Border Tensions and Aid Gaps Heighten Humanitarian Needs in Lebanon and Gaza

UNIFIL peacekeepers say the security situation along the Blue Line has deteriorated sharply. On 1 September they recorded 56 Israeli projectiles, a figure that rose to 84 the next day, and daily violations of Lebanese airspace continue. Observers also note new Israeli fortifications, engineering works and civilian demolition crews north of the line, actions the UN says breach Security Council resolution 1701 and Lebanon’s sovereignty. The mission has called for a full Israeli withdrawal from positions north of the Blue Line while it strives to keep humanitarian corridors open. During the same period UNIFIL coordinated twenty humanitarian missions, sixteen of them in the western sector, to mitigate the impact on civilians.

In Gaza, UN teams gathered hundreds of pallets of relief supplies at the Kerem Shalom‑Karem Abu Salem crossing, delivering infant food, school bags and adult diapers to vulnerable families. The World Health Organization reports that more than 13,000 patients have been evacuated for urgent care since October 2023, including over 6,000 children, yet thousands still await specialized treatment unavailable locally. WHO has urged the reopening of the West Bank referral pathway, which would allow patients to reach hospitals in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The influx of aid arrives as the enclave braces for the upcoming rainy season.

The United Nations has appealed for urgent donor contributions to prepare Gaza’s health and sanitation infrastructure for the imminent winter, emphasizing the need to lift Israeli restrictions on essential items such as ambulances, medical equipment and engine oil for sewage treatment plants. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric called for the necessary equipment to be admitted urgently and for donor support. Parallelly, UNIFIL continues its coordination role, facilitating twenty humanitarian missions this week, sixteen in the western sector, to deliver aid and protect civilians amid the escalating border tension. The UN stresses that unrestricted access is vital to prevent a deeper humanitarian crisis.
