Rising Civilian Deaths in Yemen Amid Intensified Houthi and Government Strikes

UN officials reported that from 6 August onward Houthi‑linked missiles and drones have caused at least 17 civilian deaths in territories controlled by the Yemeni government. The deadliest incidents include a missile strike on the Jaw al‑Naseem displacement camp in Maʿrib on 7 August that injured six people, and an attack on Al‑Mokha port on 9 August that killed three port workers and wounded four others. A cargo ship hit in the Bab el‑Mandeb Strait on 11 August resulted in four crew deaths. Two civilians were killed in opposition‑held districts in late July. The Houthi movement, known as Ansar Allah, governs roughly a third of Yemen’s land but influences the majority of the population.

At least 18 million Yemenis are already food‑insecure, and around 20 million Yemenis are in need of humanitarian assistance, according to UN estimates. The political and humanitarian crisis that erupted in 2011 has displaced millions, stretching shelter, health and water services. Recent strikes have also hit civilian infrastructure, including fuel storage facilities and a residential compound at a Saudi field hospital in Mokha, further jeopardising essential supplies. UN spokespersons emphasized that all parties must respect international humanitarian and human‑rights law and take feasible precautions to avoid civilian harm.

Yemeni government forces carried out about 200 airstrikes on Houthi positions within a 24‑hour period, causing dozens of casualties and destroying weapons depots. UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg warned that attacks on commercial shipping raise serious concerns for regional stability and the fragile truce that has largely held since 2022. Both the envoy and UN human‑rights officials called on all sides to de‑escalate and halt actions that risk returning Yemen to full‑scale conflict.
