UN Uses AI to Boost Inclusive Education, Cut Methane Emissions, and Speed TB Screening
UN agencies are scaling AI tools—from interactive textbooks for children with disabilities to methane leak alerts and rapid TB screening—while establishing governance frameworks to keep the technology equitable and safe.
AI‑enhanced learning for children with disabilities
UNICEF’s Accessible Digital Textbooks for All (ADT) programme now incorporates artificial‑intelligence to turn standard textbooks into interactive, personalised resources. The AI‑assisted version operates in 17 countries and reaches nearly two million children, including those with learning difficulties such as six‑year‑old Ari in Jamaica. Globally, about 240 million children live with disabilities, a barrier that ADT seeks to overcome by delivering content in formats they can use. UNICEF aims to expand the initiative to 50 countries by 2030, with six new members joining in 2026 alone. The design process involves advocacy groups to ensure the technology reflects community needs.
AI cutting methane emissions and accelerating TB diagnosis
UNEP’s Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) uses AI to analyse data from 30 satellites, spotting methane plumes up to 15 times faster than human analysts. Since its launch in 2024, the system has issued about 7,500 alerts, prompting 42 mitigation actions that together have avoided emissions comparable to 24 million gas‑powered cars. Because methane is roughly 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide, these reductions also cut smog‑related health risks. In parallel, the World Health Organization supports AI‑driven computer‑aided detection for tuberculosis screening in low‑resource settings. The technology, now used in Ethiopia’s gold‑mining regions, generates rapid likelihood scores that speed patients through the diagnostic cascade, helping to lower community transmission.
Governance and cross‑sector AI applications
UN bodies are applying AI across many fields, from locating unexploded ordnance to mapping disaster impacts and tracking radiation hotspots. To ensure these uses respect human rights, the UN created a Global Dialogue on AI Governance together with an Independent International Scientific Panel in 2025, and it is expanding a network that builds AI expertise in low‑income nations. The ethical framework rests on UNESCO’s 2021 AI ethics standard and WHO’s health‑AI guidance. Secretary‑General António Guterres calls AI both the greatest opportunity and risk of the century, urging inclusive oversight so the technology advances development without compromising rights.
